one last post on hurricanes

I'm really surprised the rail industry hasn't pushed for federal monies to enable mass evacuations.

It seems like a great opportunity to get massive subsidies. I've always felt that passenger rail systems have been the biggest, most absurd cash cow ever for freight rail owners. If you look at the rail systems in Chicago and SF, the money for rights of way leases are absurd. and Amtrak is even worse. I believe a huge part of why we don't see more passenger rail networks is because we don't pay marginal cost for access to the freight networks. Frankly, if you aren't paying marginal cost and you've got deep pockets you're better off building or buying your own.

Regardless of my rant, I'd be willing to write a proposal for modular passenger systems for emergency evacuation of metropolitan areas via rail. I reckon there's a few billion dollars in it.
