ode to the juniper berry

I learned today that Carl Johnson passed. As Phil Enis said, he was a good guy. I worked with him as a staffer at NARUC and as a staffer on the joint board and I liked him a lot.

Despite probably only seeing each other 5 times a year, plus another 5 or 10 interminable conference calls and a few collaborative projects, I felt pretty close to him. Maybe this was because he was always Carl - he either like you or he didn't and you either liked him or you didn't.

It seems like just the other day we were stuck in red boiling springs, tn, drinking too much (moonshine, natch) and trying to not hurt anyone with our innate sense of curmudgeonlyness.

I know he was a wisk(e)y drinker (and how), but I will always remember him chuckling (it was hard to get much more than that out of him, even when I was really on) about my spontaneously composed poem entitled "ode to the juniper berry" delivered with an upturned finger on the glass and the stiff upper lip of a right and proper gin drinker.

dulce et decorum est indeed, you bastards.

Carl, I miss you - that you managed to bring the best out in me says something about your character, or lack thereof.

you go ooh and ahh when I jump in my car

been very happily rockin' yo! bum rush the show by the one PE, PE number 1 as of late.

how awesome was this album? it was so awesome.

how awesome is this album? it is so awesome.

I just point out that vocally, chuck d's delivery is incredible.

"you go ooh and ahh when I jump in my car/people treat me like kareem abdul jabar"

is really great delivery - ooh plays off ahh which near rhymes car. he come back with abdul to play off the ooh and rhymes jabar with car. it's really, really good. I think the best thing about it is that he delivers near rhymes and out of sync rhymes perfectly - it sounds natural and flows without being forced but doesn't hang up on anything

visits from points east, northeast and southeast

so long lost compadre rick white found me on the internets (this very blog!) and rocked an excellent visit with brother anthony in tow and supported by law escuela companion mark. raiders game (from the black hole), a trip to the german tourist club, midnight run to the beach (one of two!) and toronado/farmers brown antics were all totally awesome.

yo la tengo and this whole heart thing

so i caught myself singing yo la tengo's cover of speeding motorcycle on my speeding motorcycle on the way home tonight.

many girls have taken me for a ride, but i never slow down.

what was interesting to me was that ira said they had never met daniel when he sang with them on WFMU. who knew. same goes, apparently, for dave grohl. this world, it's small and all connected. if you're not careful the hulk will run you over.
